If you spend any time refurbishing PlayStation 2 consoles, knowing how to identify the version number is essential. Each version has subtle differences that can affect compatibility with replacement parts, so correctly identifying the console version will save you time and frustration when sourcing components.

Quick Identification by Model and Serial Number

For most PlayStation 2 models, you can identify the console version using the model number and serial number printed on the back of the system. In some cases, however, internal inspection of the motherboard is required.

Understanding Model Numbers and Country Codes

PlayStation 2 model numbers begin with the prefix SCPH, followed by a five-digit number. The last digit in the model number represents the country code:

Example: A model number of SCPH-39001 indicates a North American console (country code 1).

Versions 1, 2, and 3

These early models all use the model number SCPH-3000# and differ based on serial number prefix and date code.

Details are currently unclear for this revision. Identification may require motherboard inspection.

Later Versions (7–11)

For these models (SCPH-3900# and SCPH-5000#), external markings are not sufficient to determine the version. You must open the case and inspect the motherboard model number.
